my haiku for the painted bunting

on the post oak branch
stroke of purple, red and green
a painted bunting

a bunting couple has been at the feeder the past couple of days!!!
i love watching them.

prairie hill in mid summer
so i don't know what was crazier, that we were on back porch eating dinner in 100 degrees,
or that we saw four deer on the hill... they went into the cedar trees and never came back out...

something old/something new

i bought this frame when i was young,,, oh in my teens.
it's grown vintage right along with me. :)

well, not sure what made me think about this
old frame that's been hidden away in drawers over the years -
but i decided to make a few small watercolor sketches for the
six oval windows...

things i like
blue and yellow butterflies.

sunrise framed in the post oak branches

it's been in the triple digits in oklahoma
so greg and i swim just about every day
or sail if the wind is just right.

cicada

early this morning i watched 'an army' of black birds settle on our post oak trees -
i figured out they were after a cicada breakfast! which must equal to a t-bone with all  that meat.

we've been eating dinner on the back patio in the evenings and watching the
hummingbirds sit on the tiniest of bare oak branches - it's a delightful gentle scene,,,

but the bigger birds (even cardinals) start their chase on the cicadas and it gets crazy.
cicadas are clumsy and clunky flyers - and they screech so loud!

i caught one and let my dog sniff and paw at it -
got a quick sumi-e painting and let it go,,,
back into that cycle.

my husband, (bless him), told me it was henry david thoreau's birthday today.
i love hdt!

a few short quotes by him:

"an early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day."

"do what you love. know your own bone; gnaw at it, bury it, unearth it, and gnaw it still."

"it is never too late to give up our prejudices."

Handsome Blazing Star

another gift from nature. :)
i shall add it to my oklahoma collection.

meet the Handsome Blazing Star.

i found the first few long stems growing in my own wild backyard a few days ago.
so this weekend i decided to check the flowers (and bison & rocks) in the wildlife refuge.
to my delight i found a huge patch of these lovely wild flowers.
they are super drought resistant.

the prairie contains perfect beauty.

summer means breeding season for the bison.
the bull on the right was licking the female cow's butt!
yup, that is 'courtship.'
i didn't see any fighting but it can get pretty tense among the males during this time.

the bison are looking strong and healthy this year!
just look at this gorgeous animal!!!

i had to visit one of my favorite rock formations.
i call him "Native Fish."
do you see him in the center?
to me it looks like a native american profile with a fish scale body...

i wish the water would rise for him.

and here's Heart Rock
i can't describe how amazing and magical this huge rock is!
and it sits on this massive rock wall!
in a separate post, one day, i will share the legend of Heart Rock. :)

and one final image,,,
it rained this evening.
it was bliss... fresh air, sounds of frogs, crickets, birds,
peace in the studio and home.

Butterfly

Spring I, acrylic

Needing to paint two ideas in my head from spring!
The butterflies that were so abundant and next the
beautiful every shade of purple lemon monarda flowers.
I usually don't paint with acrylics but this time it seemed
like a good idea for quick drying.
